The female has a much lighter color on the head, neck & chest.
The adult has white wing feathers
as well as black ones.
Threat display.
The Anhinga is often seen
with its wings spread out
to dry them in the sun.

It does not have the oil glands
for waterproofing its feathers
like most water birds.
The Anhinga often swims
with only its head and neck above water.

It is sometimes called the Snakebird.
The Anhinga spears its prey
with its pointed beak.
