A park brochure explains the origin of the name "Devil's Millhopper".
The shape of the sinkhole resembles a hopper that was used to funnel grain onto a millstone.
Fossilized bones and teeth found at the bottom of the sinkhole were said to be remnants of bodies fed to the devil.
